Measure the Joy-Con on a computer
Hold the Sync button on the Joy-Con rail until the lights sweep, pair it to a computer over Bluetooth and run the Controller drift test. Each Joy-Con shows as its own controller with one stick. Note the resting deviation. Joy-Con at 5 to 15% respond well to calibration; above 20% the module is finished.
How do you calibrate Joy-Con on the Switch?
- Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks.
- Press the drifting stick. The screen shows its raw position.
- Press X, then follow the prompts: release the stick, rotate it slowly along the edge, release again.
- Confirm. The console stores a new center for that Joy-Con.
Re-measure on the computer afterwards: the console calibration does not change the raw value the Joy-Con sends, so the test will still show the offset, but games on the Switch will now ignore it. If drift returns within days, the stick needs cleaning or replacing.

Clean under the stick
Lift the rubber skirt around the stick base with a toothpick, blow compressed air into the gap, then work a small amount of electrical contact cleaner under the skirt with a swab while rotating the stick thirty times. The folded-cardboard trick, a small square of card wedged under the stick's metal flap, works by pressing the wiper harder onto the track and sometimes buys a few weeks. Neither fixes a worn track.
Does Nintendo repair Joy-Con drift for free?
Nintendo repairs drifting Joy-Con free of charge in the United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom and several other regions, with or without warranty. Submit a repair request on Nintendo's support site, ship the Joy-Con alone, and expect it back in one to three weeks with a new stick module. In regions without the programme the repair is paid but still cheaper than a new pair.
Replace the Joy-Con stick yourself
Joy-Con sticks are not soldered; they connect with a ribbon cable, which makes replacement a 20-minute job. You need a Y00 tri-wing driver for the four shell screws, a Phillips #00 for the inside, a plastic spudger and a replacement stick. Hall effect Joy-Con sticks cost a little more than the standard part and never drift. Disconnect the battery first, release the stick's ribbon cable from its latch, swap the module, reconnect, reassemble and run the Switch calibration once. The How to replace an analog stick module guide shows the ribbon cable handling.

Frequently asked questions
Do Joy-Con 2 for Switch 2 drift?
Joy-Con 2 use a redesigned potentiometer stick, not Hall effect. Early reports show less drift, but the same methods apply.
Why does calibration say the stick is still off center?
The calibration screen displays raw input. If games no longer drift, the calibration is working.
Can I use the Pro Controller calibration for Joy-Con?
Yes, the same menu calibrates any connected controller, one stick at a time.
