How to fix PS5 controller drift

PS5 controller drift has three real fixes, in order of effort: rewrite the DualSense calibration over USB, clean the stick module, or replace it with a magnetic module that cannot drift. The DualSense is a great controller with an ordinary stick, and one under 2% at rest needs nothing at all.

The DualSense accepts a new center calibration over USB. It is the first thing to try.

Measure before touching anything

Run the Controller drift test over USB or Bluetooth. A DualSense under 2% needs nothing. Between 2 and 15%, firmware recentering will almost certainly cure it. Above 15%, recentering will work for a while but the module is near the end; plan a replacement.

How do you recenter a DualSense over USB?

  1. Connect the DualSense to a Windows, macOS or Linux computer with a USB-C data cable. Close Steam and DS4Windows so nothing else holds the device.
  2. Open the calibration page on this site in Chrome or Edge (it uses the method from the open-source DualShock Tools project) and grant it access to the controller when the browser asks.
  3. Choose stick center calibration. Release both sticks, confirm, and keep your hands off while it samples.
  4. Choose stick range calibration. Rotate both sticks slowly around the full outer edge several times, then confirm.
  5. Test the new calibration, which stays active until the controller restarts. If it is good, confirm the permanent write, which replaces the factory calibration, and wait for the confirmation. Do not unplug during the write.
  6. Re-measure with the drift test. The resting value should now be under 1%.

The new center is stored in the controller, so it applies on the PS5 and everywhere else. Repeat the procedure if drift returns.

Range calibration: rotate both sticks around the edge slowly so the controller learns its true limits.

Clean the stick module

If recentering helps only briefly or the drift comes and goes, debris is likely. Open the controller: remove the two screws under the back handles and the two under the stickers, release the back shell clips, unplug the battery, then lift the main board. The stick modules sit on the board with four metal tabs. Spray electrical contact cleaner into the small openings of each potentiometer while rotating the stick, let it dry fully, reassemble and re-measure. Use isopropyl on the stick caps and the shell holes while you are in there.

Replace it with a Hall effect or TMR module

A DualSense stick module is soldered to the board with 14 through-hole pins, so replacement needs a soldering iron, desoldering wick or a pump, and about an hour. Drop-in Hall effect and TMR modules for the DualSense match the original footprint and come with a small adapter board on some versions. After the swap, run the range calibration again so the controller learns the new module's limits. The How to replace an analog stick module guide covers the soldering in detail. A repair shop will do it for a fraction of a new controller's price.

A TMR module is a direct drop-in for the DualSense footprint and cannot wear like a carbon track.

How do you keep drift from coming back?

Lower the in-game deadzone only as far as you need, since large stick throws against the rim wear the carbon fastest. Store the controller stick-up so dust does not settle into the gap. Use a stick cap with a wider rim so your thumb pushes the cap, not the stem.

Frequently asked questions

Will Sony fix PS5 controller drift under warranty?

Yes, drift is treated as a defect during the warranty period. Outside it, the methods here cost far less than Sony's out-of-warranty replacement.

Does the firmware recentering void the warranty?

It writes to the same calibration memory Sony's service tools use and leaves no trace. Opening the controller, on the other hand, breaks the warranty seal.

Does the DualSense Edge drift too?

The Edge uses the same potentiometer design but its modules are user-replaceable without tools. Sony sells spare modules.
