Gamepad Calibration

Controller calibration in Steam and on Steam Deck

To calibrate a controller in Steam, open Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Settings and set each stick's inner deadzone to your measured value. One setting covers every Steam game and every controller brand, and the Steam Deck uses the same menu for its built-in sticks.

Measure, then open Steam

Get the recommended deadzone from the measurement above. Then in Steam enable support for your controller type under Settings → Controller (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro or generic) so Steam can read it.

How do I set the deadzone for all games in Steam?

  1. Steam → Settings → Controller.
  2. Click Calibration & Advanced Settings (the controller must be connected).
  3. Under each stick, set the inner deadzone to the recommended value. Steam shows the live stick position so you can confirm the dot stays at center.
  4. If the stick cannot reach the edge, lower the outer deadzone until full deflection registers.
  5. Optionally choose a response curve (linear, aggressive, relaxed) to match your aim preference.

These settings apply to every game launched through Steam, including non-Steam games added to the library.

Per-game overrides and Steam Deck calibration

For a single game, open its controller layout (gear icon → Controller settings → Controller layout) and edit the joystick deadzone under the stick's settings. On Steam Deck, press the Steam button → Settings → Controller → Calibration & Advanced Settings to calibrate the built-in sticks exactly the same way; the Deck also has a Joystick Deadzone Calibration that samples the resting position automatically.

What if the drift keeps growing?

If the drift keeps growing, re-measure every few weeks. If the needed deadzone passes 20%, the stick module is worn. Steam Deck stick modules are replaceable and Hall effect versions exist; for Xbox and PlayStation pads, a module swap or warranty claim is the long-term fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the game still drift when Steam shows the stick centered?

The game is probably reading the controller directly, bypassing Steam Input. Enable 'Steam Input per-game setting → Forced On' in the game's properties under Controller.

Does the Steam deadzone work in games outside Steam?

Only games launched through Steam. Add a non-Steam game to the library and launch it from there to use the same calibration.
